1 【方】 〔方角〕 a direction.

●東の方に in an easterly direction; to the east; eastward.

2 【方】 〔敬称で人〕 a person; a gentleman [lady].

●この[あの]方 this [that] gentleman [lady]

・男[女]の方 a gentleman [lady]; a male [female] person

・そういうお名前の方 a gentleman [lady] of that name

・田中さんという方 a gentleman [lady] named [by the name of] Tanaka; a (certain) Mr. [Mrs., Miss, Ms.] Tanaka.

3 【片】 〔片方〕 one side.

●片や去年の優勝チーム. On this [one] side, last year's champions.

方がつく･片がつく 〔問題が〕 be settled; be sorted out; be cleared up; be closed; be disposed of; 〔仕事が〕 be finished (off); come [be brought] to a close [an end]; 〔借金が〕 be paid (off).

方をつける･片をつける 〔問題の〕 settle 《a question》; sort 《a problem》 out; clear 《a matter》 up; dispose of…; 〔仕事の〕 finish sth (off); get through with 《one's work》; bring 《one's work》 to a close [an end]; 〔借金の〕 pay (off).

●きちんと片をつける set things to rights [in order]; clear everything up; settle things properly
